Opening shots
An opening shot is what the audience first sees in a film, it is how the film begins. It is important for a film to have a strong opening shot because it what will initially hook the audience into watching.
To create an effective opening shot, it is important to engage the audience with the first thing that they see on the screen and hook them for the rest of the film, for example an opening shot could include a shot of a setting e.g. a building; because this is a way in which a film can set the scene and establish where the film is set for the audience. This combined with the use of media such as mis-en-scene and different sounds would create the ideal opening shot which is able to engage and hook an audience.
TASK: Create an effective opening shot using the dialogue " sometimes I am scared of the beast within me"
Here we have created an opening shot with the given piece of text and created a clip that shows a young girl who seems troubled. The slow zoom into subject combined with the direct address to the camera creates a sense of suspense within the shot and makes the audience want to watch what happens next.
