Rule of thirds The rule of thirds is a photography technique which is used to help divert the attention of the viewer of an image to a specific viewpoint. The rule of thirds can be applied into videography and film when creating the establishing shots or introducing/ showing emotion on a character's face. The rule of thirds is created by a grid method, which indicates that the focal point of a photo is placed in the centre third of the grid. Here are some examples of the rule of thirds in action:
Synopsis Title: Aftertaste Tagline: A sweet offer never comes without a bitter aftertaste Target audience: The target audience of our film will be 15-23 year old, students /working class people of both sexes. This is because domestic abuse is topical issue in that age range and society. We also feel that this issue is more prominent in those early stages of adult life, because young couples are still naive to the world, and would expect someone that “loves” them not to do that. Classification: Reasons for classification: The film will be classified as a 15 because the BBFC classification states that violence may be strong but no severe injuries may be shown; can include strong threats and language and also strong/ dangerous behaviour may be shown full so the audience can’t copy; it’s kept discrete. Short film ideas We have created a mind map to be able to plan out our ideas for our short film around the theme of domestic violence. We plotted a range of different ideas and questions which could provoke different emotions and ideas that we could convey within the making of our film.
