Script - DRAFT 2
This is the second draft of our script for our short film, AFTERTASTE. After receiving various feedback and constructive criticism with some corrections; we came up with a new idea for the film, while still including similar scenes. We carried out more research from the time we created our second draft and I think it is visible that we put more thoughts into the way we worded certain characters and scenes. 

                                               

AMBER AND BLAKE’S HOUSE-

(Sad music plays, clips roll of broken vase, messy bed, beer bottle etc.)

*heartbeat sound effect, piercing noise*

Aftertaste title credits:

KITCHEN BLAKE AND AMBER’S HOUSE-

(Close-up of AMBER at side angle, camera slowly zooms out to a mid-shot, BLAKE enters the kitchen and stands behind her)

BLAKE

“Wash this up for me, going to go sort out the garden”

(Drops mug into the sink)

AMBER

*muffles* “hmm ok”

(Camera cuts to extreme close-up shot of BLAKE holding AMBER’s wrists on the edge of the sink)

AMBER

*whispering* “Please stop” (trying to get away from him)

BLAKE

“Be quiet, stop trying to attract attention, you know you will be fine, I’m always going to love you”

Mid-Shot of the couple:

(AMBER pushes BLAKE off, she then turns to face him, and he swings his hand back, camera cuts to black)

*Smashing sound effect*

BATHROOM-

(Mid-shot of camera showing AMBER’s legs in the bath, sound effect of water running and hitting the bath)

Camera cuts to black, water noise still playing:

(AMBERS hand is on the edge of the sink, tap is running, toilet flushing in the background)

Camera cuts to black, heartbeat sound effect plays:

AMBER’S BACKDOOR- MORNING

(Over-the-shoulder shot, showing AMBER walking towards the backdoor where BLAKE is seen mowing the lawn, AMBER leans on the backdoor and waits for BLAKE to finish)

Mid-Shot of BLAKE:

BLAKE

“Are you going to stand there being useless or are you going to get me some breakfast?”

(Mid-shot of AMBER, she huffs and walks off, camera cuts to a close up shot of dirty dishes in the sink)

Camera fades to AMBER and BLAKE sat on the table with breakfast:

BLAKE

“Looks good, thanks babe”

(Extreme-close-up of BLAKE eating his breakfast)

BLAKE

“Would it hurt to bring out some sauce?”

Camera cuts to extreme long shot of AMBER sat on the table:

(AMBER stares down, clear to the audience that she is upset and fed up of being treated horribly)

Camera cuts to an over-the-shoulder shot of BLAKE looking at MADDIE:

BLAKE

“If she won’t do it, can you grab me some bloody sauce?”

MADDIE

*disgusted* “What?”

Camera cuts to an over-the-shoulder shot AMBER looking at BLAKE:

BLAKE

“Are you bloody deaf?...or just stupid?”

Camera cuts to an over-the-shoulder shot of BLAKE looking at MADDIE:

MADDIE

“Do it yourself”

Extreme-close-up of BLAKE:

BLAKE

“What was that?”

Mid-shot of MADDIE:

MADDIE

“Shut your mouth!”

(MADDIE leaves the room, camera unfocused as she walks out)

Close-up Two Shot of AMBER and BLAKE:

(BLAKE is the focus on the camera he is holding the knife he was eating his breakfast with)

BLAKE
“That friend of yours needs to learn to shut her trap, she is doing my head in!”

Camera zooms out and focuses on the couple:

(BLAKE puts the knife down and holds AMBER’S hand, AMBER just stays quiet and then BLAKE gets up and goes behind AMBER)

Close-up of the couple:

(BLAKE whispers into AMBER’S ear)

BLAKE

“Going out tonight, make sure you eat dinner and have an early night, I’ll be back to look after you later”

                              Camera cuts to black, mid shot of AMBER:

(AMBER is just staring into her cup of coffee; clear to audiences she has had enough of the way she’s being treated)

(A Camera cut to black shows MADDIE in her bedroom on her laptop, camera cuts to black again shows the empty table as AMBER has gone but her coffee is still there.)

AMBER AND BLAKE’S BEDROOM:

(Over the shoulder shot of AMBER, the camera can see her reflection in the mirror)

AMBER

*huffs, mumbling to herself* I’ve had enough!

(AMBER cries in frustration, throws everything off her dressing table including the photo frame BLAKE possess over of his parents)

Camera cuts to black and then pans to her sat on her bed with MADDIE:

*Acoustic music plays subtly in the background*

MADDIE

“Why are you still with that bastard?”

AMBER
“I can’t leave, he tells me he still loves me”

MADDIE
“You call that love? What he does to you isn’t love”

AMBER

“I guess…”

Camera zooms out:

(AMBER and MADDIE are sat on the bed, talking loud acoustic music)

Camera cuts to black:

BLAKE AND AMBER’S LIVING ROOM-

BLAKE

“You know I have been thinking, we are supposed to be a couple, why on earth is she still here!”

(Camera cuts to a mid-shot of MADDIE looking disgusted at the way BLAKE is talking to AMBER, camera cuts back to a two shot of BLAKE and AMBER)

AMBER

“You know she’s going through a hard time at home, she just needs space”

BLAKE

“She can go somewhere else can’t she? She has nothing to do with me; I don’t care about her! I don’t need her to be around me 24/7!”

AMBER

“Shut up!”

(Heartbeat sound effect gets louder in the background; BLAKE comes towards AMBER in an aggressive manner, camera cuts to close-up shot of MADDIE in shock)

*Slamming door sound effect*

AMBER’S BEDROOM-

(MADDIE is sat on the floor crying, AMBER walks in and comforts her, crying and sniffling sound effects)

Camera cuts to black and fades into BLAKE in bed:

(BLAKE is lying in bed with beer bottles on the bedside table, over-the-shoulder shot of AMBER staring at him in bed, camera then cuts to a two shot of AMBER and MADDIE with their coats and shoes on)

MADDIE

“You ready to go?”

Camera cuts to a two shot of AMBER and MADDIE walking outside:

MADDIE

“I found a place we can go just until we both find work.”

Camera cuts to black:

BLAKE’S BEDROOM-

(BLAKES alarm sounds, extreme close up on his phone, camera then cuts to mid-shot of BLAKE sat in the edge of the bed, he looks around in confusion as AMBER isn’t there, he stands up and looks into the mirror where he sees the smashed photo frame)

BLAKE

*mumbling to himself* “You’ve got to be joking, where is this stupid bitch?”

(BLAKE picks up his phone, tries to call AMBER the call goes through to voicemail, BLAKE slams his phone done and picks up the photo which reads on the back)

VOICEOVER

Hi Son. You should have got this frame on your 9^th birthday. I am sorry I can’t be there for you at the moment; I hope daddy is looking after you. I’m sorry for leaving; it was just a hard time for mummy and daddy at the moment. I hope school is ok and you have lots of friends. If dad doesn’t give you this frame, I hope you read this in the future. If you need anything mummy’s friend can help, call this number 01213548562. Hopefully speak soon. I love you millions and millions.

(As the number reads, over-the-should shot of BLAKE typing the number into his phone)

Office setting, counselling session-

SPLIT-SCREEN:

(Camera is placed over-the-shoulder of the counsellor on BLAKE’s side and a mid-shot of AMBER sat on the bed with MADDIE)

(AMBER ANSWERS ALL THE QUESTIONS THE COUNSELLOR IS ASKING BLAKE BUT FROM HER POINT OF VIEW TALKING TO MADDIE)

COUNSELLOR

What brings you here today?

AMBER

I mean… he hit me a few times, made me feel like crap but I saw potential in him hence why I stayed.

COUNSELLOR

Blake, I am here to help you (BLAKE’S anger starts to build up in his eyes) Have you ever seen a counsellor before?

AMBER

I tried offering professional help before but he didn’t have any of it but he claimed he loved me so I just left it so there was no hassle. Although when the frame broke I saw a message from his mum, he had never mentioned his past to me before.

COUNSELLOR

What do you expect from this counselling process?

AMBER

I just wanted us to be back to how we were in the past, we we’re so close, did everything together I saw such a bright future for the pair of us.

COUNSELLOR

What’s the problem from your viewpoint, what makes things better?

AMBER

Alcohol normally does it, after a few beers he will show me some affection or if I am doing what he tells me too.

CAMERA slides to BLAKE’s side only:

BLAKE

I’ve just had enough! I’ve just had enough!! Please, just let me get my head straight for a second! *Anger builds up BLAKE’S voice raises* I love her, I really do. Maybe if I grew up with a stable family none of this would’ve happened. Now she’s gone, what do I do with myself? I FEEL LIKE A MONSTER. *Slams hands down onto the table*

(BLAKE bursts into tears, head in his hands, camera fades out into facts about Domestic Violence)
